Taking Older Relatives on Holiday
A third of Britons feel guilty about leaving an older relative at home while they take a holiday – that's according to research by Anchor, a non-profit provider of housing and care for over-55s.
In a recent Huffington Post blog, penned by Jane Ashcroft, Anchor's Chief Executive, the conundrum facing many UK families was laid bare.
More than half of under-35s feel bad about leaving older relations behind when they take a break.
But Ashcroft points out that taking an elderly relative on holiday isn't impossible - and with good planning can be a pleasurable affair for all concerned.
Choosing the right mode of transport is important: if air travel creates anxiety, road, rail or sea might present a suitable alternative.
The blog offers some useful tips for dementia sufferers too: take a familiar item that they can touch, hold or smell.
Travel Tips
Ashcroft offers some advice for travelling with older people.
- Plan extra breaks/time in the travel schedule
- when packing leave plenty of space for medication
- Pack extra layers, even if the destination is warm
Ashcroft has some words of wisdom for those who do feel guilty about leaving relatives at home: their relations would probably want them to have a pleasant, relaxing holiday – and wouldn't want them to feel bad about it. Souvenirs, postcards and holiday snaps are all likely to be appreciated during and after the trip.
Respite care can be a useful option for those who play a big role in an older relative's care. Support and care can be provided through short-term stays, allowing the care giver to take a sometimes much-needed break.
While research suggests that many people believe retirement will result in a drop in quality of life, Ashcroft focuses on the fact that many older people enjoy new leases of life when they retire – including in the realm of sport.
