5 Magical European City Breaks for winter 2020-21

Posted on 26 March 2020

Under normal circumstances, a pre- or post-Christmas city break in Europe is (often) surprisingly low-cost - with the added low season benefit of fewer visitors. However, the winter of 2020-21 may be anything but normal. If the pandemic subsides, then there could be a rush of people heading to Europe for a much-needed getaway; or we may find that travel is still restricted.

But, erring on the positive side, we've put together some of the best European cities to visit when things begin to return to normal.

Vienna

The Austrian capital is a delight any time of year, but in winter it is particularly spellbinding. The centre is blessed with an abundance of ornate architecture - perfect to explore between cafe visits with leisurely hot chocolates and sachertorte (Austria's wicked take on the chocolate cake). Visit wonders such as the Schönbrunn Palace and St. Charles Church, and enjoy outdoor simulcasts of live opera - popular even on the chilliest of evenings!

Amsterdam

As with all other European capitals, Amsterdam is very quiet right now, but this history-rich city is normally extremely popular with tourists - although less so in winter. And if it's possible to travel in November or December, the Dutch capital is a truly rewarding destination for a winter adventure: Enjoy Van Goghs and Rembrandts galore (they have a museum each!); relaxed cycle trips across the city; and lots of meals based around bread, potatoes and cheese - perfect for colder days. And if you're a fan of Christmas, celebrations last the whole of December.

Berlin

When it comes to dramatic, culturally-rich winter cities, it doesn't get more intense than Berlin, with its blend of gothic architecture and bohemian counterculture. Christmas is a treat in the German capital - particularly for children. There more than 60 Xmas markets, including the magical WeihnachtsZauber, near the graceful Französischer Dom and the Konzerthaus. Add Michelin-starred eateries, world-class night clubs and some very unorthodox art museums, and you have a city break like no other. For fans of spy thrillers, Berlin is the capital of espionage, having been on the front line of the Cold War for more than 40 years; it's also the home of the curry sausage (currywurst) - the perfect street food for a cold winter's day.

Lucerne

Winter sports breaks can be rather insular affairs, with participants seldom leaving the slopes and bars of their resorts - usually because there's nothing to see immediately outside of them. However, this isn't the case with Lucerne in Switzerland. Enjoy museum tours and ferry rides on the majestic Lake Lucerne, while having comprehensive access to nearby resorts by train and bus. The perfect place to rest your weary ski legs, while enjoying cheese fondue or rösti (potato pancake) - before planning your next round of downhill adrenaline kicks.

Venice

Right now Venice is quieter than it has ever been, but if the current situation improves after summer, Venice may well be a popular place for people to enjoy a break and start to feel normal again. Usually, winters in Venice are rather tranquil affairs, since visitor numbers are much lower. Who knows how busy Venice will be at the year's end - but this beautiful labyrinth of canals and palaces offers a very special experience, crowds or no crowds.
