A recent survey by the Chartered Institute of Insurers (CII) has revealed the most popular ski resorts among Britons for 2016. Chamonix in France topped the rankings, followed by Zell am See in Austria and Girdwood in the USA. Cairngorm in Scotland was the only UK resort to make the top 10.

The survey also revealed the most popular all-time favourite resorts among UK skiers and snowboarders. In this list the Cairngorms came in at number three, just behind Chamonix in second, and Soldeu in Austria in first.

Worrying Insurance Buying Habits

The survey also established that some UK holidaymakers were taking big risks on their winter sports trips. Of the 4,000 respondents, nine per cent had taken out travel cover but did not have specific winter sports insurance. 10 per cent did not know if they were covered for skiing or snowboarding, while nine per cent admitted to not having any insurance whatsoever.

Big Bills

In Europe, holidaymakers can face large bills if they do not have adequate travel insurance in place. Piste rescues can cost hundreds of pounds, as can private ambulances. Helicopter evacuations can cost several thousand.

Operations for bone fractures can also run to thousands of pounds.

Huge Healthcare Costs in the USA

For those who have an accident in the USA and do not have adequate insurance, the costs can be much higher. The USA does not have a reciprocal health agreement with the UK. US health costs are also much higher than in Europe.

EHIC

While the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides UK travellers with free basic emergency health care, it is far from adequate for winter sports holidays – and indeed holidays in general.
