7 of Greece's Most Peaceful Beaches
Greece's beach resorts are extremely popular - and with good reason. But if you fancy having an entire Greek beach to yourself, you might just manage
it if you choose your destination wisely and visit at the right time.
Here are seven of Greece's most tranquil beaches, blending natural beauty and crystal clear waters - where fellow sun-worshippers are a rarity.
Elafonisi, Chania, Crete
This tiny island can be accessed by foot - by wading through shallow, gas-blue waters.
Gold-pink sand edges Elafonisi, home to a stunning nature reserve and one of Crete's quietest and most relaxing beaches.
Balos, Chania, Crete
Another pin-up Cretan beach - quite possibly the island's best-known - is Balos.
Its wild beauty and turquoise-blue waters have attracted the great and good - including Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
While Balos can get rather busy in July and August, it's much less frequented in shoulder months - and almost deserted come winter.
Seychelles, Ikaria
A magical landscape of wooded gorges, rock-strewn tracts and glorious white-pebble beaches, Ikaria is a truly unique part of the world.
Seychelles beach - Ikaria's most famous - is blessed with strange rock formations and gloriously blue waters.
Best of all, it rarely gets busy.
Egremni, Lefkada
This vast sandy bay is hemmed in by mesmerising rock formations.
After descending the 250 steps, you'll find umbrellas to rent.
Less famous than nearby Porto Katsiki, Egremni is ideal if you want plenty of space to sunbathe, stroll, and take periodic dips in the warm azure-blue waters.
Hiliadou, Evia
If you're based in Athens for your Greek trip and fancy some serious beach-time, head to the wild beauty of Central Evia's shoreline, just 2.5 hours away.
The beach features a cove for nudists and if you avoid weekends,
it is usually quiet.
Aspri Limni, Chania, Crete
It may be small, but it's very pretty - a white sandy beach enclosed by rocks, creating a natural dam and lake.
Home to the famed Cretan palm, Aspri Limni is not far from the old Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa.
Best of all, this beach is relatively unknown to tourists, so you may well get it all to yourself.
Chalikiada, Agistri
Just an hour from the port of Piraeus, Agistri is another good choice if you're Athens-based and need some quality beach time.
Chalikiada is a peaceful pebble bay with clean water, accessed along a narrow path through a dreamy clutch of pines.
