5 of the Best Late Season Ski Resorts

Posted on Thursday, 7 April 2016

Spring may be sheepishly hauling itself out of a long dark winter, but some of us still crave snowy mountainsides on which to hurtle down.

Luckily, there are plenty of resorts offering late winter sports action.

Here are five of our favourites:

Les Deux Alpes, France

Running until April 25, Les Deux Alpes sits on an elongated village on a lofty col. Along with uppermost slopes of 3,570m, the resort also boasts a glacier – which is so chilly it can be used to enjoy winter sports in summertime too. A superb terrain park for snowboarders and some excellent off-piste action makes Les Deus Alpes an all-round winner.

Winter Park, US

Located near the Continental Divide, world class Winter Park serves up some of the USA's most challenging mogul fields and couloirs. But beginners and those who simply want to cruise down a mountain in glorious surroundings are well catered for too. The nightlife is nothing to rave about, but for those focused on on-piste action, Winter Park a great resort. The season lasts until April 26.

Ischgl, Austria

Famed for its outlandish opening and closing parties, this ski area in the Tirol is 1,800m high and offers some great late-season winter sports fun. The snow stays put because most of the slopes are north-west facing. Especially enjoyable for intermediates.

Val Thorens, France

At 2,300m, Val Thorens is Europe's highest resort, and boasts slopes ascending to a head-spinning 3,230m. The season concludes on May 10, following a week of concerts and parties. Impressive fast chairs and jumbo gondolas are the result of some serious lift investment in recent years, complementing the superbly usable resort layout. Just as well – because it does get busy at times.

Mammoth, US

With a season that lasts until June, Mammoth is just the ticket for those with a late hankering for some slope action. With exceptional terrain parks and a broad range of environments, beginners, intermediates and experts will find plenty to love about this leading US resort – which is just a six hour drive from Los Angeles.
