£50 Hotels: Luxury to Low-Down Rooms Around the World

Posted on Tuesday, 16 October 2018

What kind of hotel room can £50 buy you? As you can imagine, it varies hugely depending on the time of year and, more importantly, which country you are visiting. We scoured the Internet to find out what £50 can get you on Friday October 26. The research demonstrates the vast differences in what this relatively small sum can get you around the world - ranging from luxurious to low-down.

Note: Prices correct at time of writing, but are likely to change. Bear in mind that it's low season in many of these locations.

London

The Grange, Newham (3 Star): £49

Pros: It's under £50, not far from the Olympic Stadium and Westfield shopping centre.

Cons: Shared bathroom, no breakfast

Summary: It's no surprise that finding a decent £50 hotel in London is not easy. However, some reasonable rooms do exist - although many involve epic Tube journeys. The three-star Grange in Newham has a double available for £49, including flat-screen TV and free WiFi - but you have to share a bathroom. Rated 6.8 on one major hotel site, it's hardly the Ritz - but for £50 in London, it's not bad. And in July, it's already booked out.

Phuket, Thailand

Andaman Embrace Patong (5 Star): £46

Pros: It's a five star luxury hotel by Patong Beach, with access to a vast pool, sea/garden view, bathtub, minibar and breakfast included.

Cons: The reviews suggest the hotel is getting a little old, but the staff get a big thumbs up.

Summary: A night in a luxury hotel on the Andaman Sea, with breakfast included, for under £50? The delights of low-season Thailand are plain to see.

Maldives

Hotel Octave Maldives (3 Star): £48

Pros: Rated an excellent 8.5 on one hotel site, the Octave is located in the heart of Male City, offering an en-suite double with free WiFi. It's one of the best value hotels in the Maldivian capital. From here you can book day trips to some of the Maldives' stunning beaches. Breakfast included.

Cons: If you're looking for a comfortable, affordable hotel in the capital, it's hard to find fault with the Octave.

Summary: For those seeking a low-cost way to enjoy some of the world's most spectacular beaches, this is a great option.

Fiji

Aquarius On The Beach (3 Star): £46

Pros: Air-conditioned en-suite double room with free WiFi. The hotel has its own pool, spa & wellness centre and restaurant. And it's right by the beach!

Cons: The WiFi gets a bit of criticism, but the beach paradise you're in will probably make up for it.

Summary: Well appointed rooms for a great price. A boutique feel right next to the sea. An ideal base for a budget exploration of Fiji.

Costa del Sol, Spain

Rincón Sol (4 Star): £46

Pros: The beach front location got a whopping 8.9 on one hotel site, so this four-star is definitely one for beach lovers. Double rooms feature a terrace, air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom and mini-bar. Night club and on-site dining. Close to Malaga Airport.

Cons: Poor parking and a slightly aged feel were the main gripes.

Summary: The sea-view rooms get rave reviews. It looks a bit tired, but that won't worry beach fans.

Tokyo, Japan

House Ikebukuro (1 Star): £45 (Triple room)

Pros: If you're in a group of three, this offers great value in a costly (but amazing) city. Air-conditioning, free WiFi and microwave included. Japanese style rooms. 500m from JR Ikebukuro Train Station, from where you can reach Shinjuku and Shibuya in a mere 15 minutes.

Cons: Shared bathroom, walls are a little thin.

Summary: £50 gets you a comfortable room in the heart of Tokyo, with change for a Nissin pot noodle and a cold Asahi beer from 7-Eleven. What's not to love?
