Christmas Getaway Travel Tips

Posted on Friday, 22 November 2019

Millions of Britons are planning a winter sun holiday this Christmas, banishing the wind, rain and (possibly) snow - at least for a week or two.

But travelling at Christmas can be more stressful than usual, with much increased activity on the road, rail and air networks.

Thankfully, there are a few simple ways to keep the stress levels low, so you can really enjoy your seasonal escape.

Passports, boarding passes and insurance

Most countries require you to have at least six months' validity on your passport: ensure all your family members' travel documents do.

Before it's time to leave for the airport, ensure all boarding passes are printed and ready - or that you have access to digital versions on your phone/tablet.

And of course, don't forget to take out comprehensive travel insurance before you leave the UK - as recommended by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Organize those important extras

Use the internet to hunt down the best deals on travel money, car rentals, and airport transfers: Keep an eye on exchange rates and ensure you're getting a good deal; Be aware that walk-up rates for car hire can be very high this time of year, so do set aside time to find a deal before you fly; Research public transport options in lieu of taxis.

Plan your journey to the airport

It can seem like a waste of time to arrive at the airport four hours ahead of departure, but Christmas-time traffic can be heavy. If you get stuck in a tailback, it could mean a premature end to your holiday (although your insurer may be able to help). To avoid this situation, Traffic England has created an excellent website for learning about current traffic jams. Note that some airport link services may be affected by Christmas; Gatwick Express will run amended or Saturday services for some days around Christmas and New Year. Heathrow Express will also be impacted by upgrade work and amended timetables.

Check your destination's weather

It's not unknown for winter-sun seekers to step off a plane in shorts and sunglasses, only to be whipped with wind and rain. It's a good idea to check the forecast of your destination before you set off. And of course, in many countries, night time temperatures are lower than daytime temperatures. Pack clothing to suit!

Don't be a Scrooge with baggage

With many airlines charging extra for hold baggage, it can be tempting to jam everything into your cabin luggage. However, if you go over the limit, the airline staff may present you with an extra charge - even if they are wearing a twinkly Santa hat. If you think you'll go over the limit, it's a good idea to book hold luggage online before you reach the airport - because it'll be much cheaper!

And if you're taking presents overseas, plan to wrap them at your destination, as a security check could ruin your beautiful wrapping in a heartbeat, Christmas or no Christmas.

Be liquid-savvy

We've all seen irate passengers at security being told they can't board the plane with their 105ml jar of Marmite, or their 110ml bottle of French perfume. But don't forget the same rule applies for festive tipples - anything over 100ml won't know the joy of air travel! And on the return journey, it's crucial to know UK Duty Free limits if you're packing alcohol in your stowed luggage.
