Majestic snow-blanketed cathedrals, kaleidoscopic lights, the aroma of mulled wine and roast chestnuts... the Christmas markets of Europe present the perfect way to get in the festive mood. Here are our top 10 Christmas markets for this year, stretching from France to Eastern Europe.

Vienna, Austria

The Viennese love Christmas, as evidenced by their wonderfully festive markets. While the main event was first held in 1298, today Vienna offers no less than 20 Christmas spectacles. But for the classic experience, head to the Rathaus (City Hall) and enjoy the main Viennese Christmas Market. Sample delicious Austrian sausages, powerful Christmas imbibes, reindeer rides, ice skating and more. With 151 stalls, there's something for everyone.

Strasbourg, France

The first Strasbourg Christmas market took place way back in 1570, since when it has grown to 300 stalls across 10 locations. Pick up a bottle of excellent Aslastian wine, crafty festive gifts and handmade decorations. Head to the Place Kleber and see the amazing Christmas tree, before exploring the many winding alleys and charming squares.

Piazza Santa Croce, Florence, Italy

Taking over the stunning Piazza Santa Croce, Florence's famed Christmas market features 50 stalls. Set against the beautiful Franciscan Basilica, you can pick out unique gifts in the kind of pleasant atmosphere that most Christmas high streets lack. Don't miss the nativity scene in the Piazza del Duomo.

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark

Wonderful any time of year, Tivoli Gardens is especially alluring at Christmas. Expect no less than three light shows, and a traditional Pixie Band playing seasonal songs. Fantastic Christmas decorations and festive bites complete the picture. Don't miss the annual Lucia procession, featuring 100 girls wending their way through the gardens carrying candles.

Krakow, Poland

While snow can be a hit-and-miss affair in Western Europe, in Krakov you are almost assured of it. The city's market is held in the vast Rynek Glowny - the main square - and is famed for its beautiful hand-painted baubles. Boiled sweets and spiced nuts are traditional festive must-trys.

Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin, Germany

The German capital boasts numerous Christmas markets, but Gendarmenmarkt is arguably the best. The dramatic forms of Deutscher Dom and Französischer Dom create the perfect backdrop for this event, well-loved for its wooden huts, mulled wine and mouth-watering currywurst sausages. When it comes to off-beat handmade gifts, Gendarmenmarkt offers everything from original paintings to wooden carvings. A variety of music completes the experience, including choral music and jazz.

Winter Wonders, Brussels, Belgium

Brussels' chocolate-box look is only enhanced by this Christmas market, which covers the Bourse, Place de la Monnaie, Grand Place, Place Sainte Catherine and Marché aux Poissons. Treat yourself to glühwein, Belgian beers and waffles, and don't miss the massive Christmas tree - or the ice skating.

Budapest Christmas Fair and Winter Festival, Hungary

Located in Vörösmarty Square, this annual favourite is the oldest and most popular Christmas market in Hungary's capital. Explore more than 100 stands and find mulled wine, Christmas gifts and lots of hearty Hungarian food. Don't miss the Gerbeaud Coffee House, which has been converted into a giant advent calendar!

Fira de Santa Llúcia, Barcelona, Spain

Starting as a one-day event in 1786, Fira de Santa Llúcia now lasts three whole weeks. Set against the stunning Barcelona Cathedral, there are more than 300 stalls offering everything from musical instruments to Christmas decorations and jewelry.

Skansen Christmas Market, Stockholm, Sweden

This weekend Christmas market is held on the island of Djurgarden in the city's centre. Expect lots of handmade stocking fillers, dancing games and of course a big Christmas tree. Sample smoked turkey, spices and traditional Swedish sausages. Don't miss the small zoo featuring Nordic animals - including, we presume, Rudolph himself!
