7 tiny Italian towns for a cosy romantic break

Posted on Wednesday, 8 July 2020

Italy rarely misses the spot when it comes to romance. But why not sidestep predictable destinations like Venice and Florence, and instead seek out a smaller, quieter town in which to conduct some serious romance. Whether you're planning a trip with a current squeeze or long-term partner, these little towns are sure to get pulses racing - and hearts a-flutter.

Pienza, Tuscany

Known as the quintessential "Renaissance utopia", Pienza in Tuscany is typified by rolling countryside blanketed in vineyards and tiny towns with cobblestone streets. Book a cosy boutique hotel in Pienza with your favourite person, and you're all set for a truly romantic getaway, Italian style.

Sirmione, Lake Garda

Many are familiar with the stunning vistas of Lake Garda, but the fairytale village of Sirimone is far less well-known. Located on the southern shore, it boasts majestic villas, medieval castles and old churches whose walls are decorated with intricate frescoes. In normal times, the quietest season is spring - perfect for some secluded romance with your other half.

Cefalù, Sicily

This low-key town is blessed with its own beach, a peaceful harbour and an old town that could take days to explore fully. Add traditional Italian trattoria serving excellent seafood, and the fourth-century temple Diana - from whose lofty position you can enjoy glorious sunsets - and you have all the ingredients for a very amorous getaway.

Trapani, Sicily

From medieval Trapani you can take a number of show-stopping day-trips to the wondrous Egadi Islands, just a few miles offshore. You might comb the beaches of Marettimo (clothing optional), or take a dip in Favignana's Lovers' Grotto. But if you're feeling lazy, you can simply explore Trapani itself: medieval ruins, the pretty Lido Paradiso beach, and cosy restaurants are among the headline attractions.

Spoleto, Umbria

Just two hours' train ride from Rome, sleepy Spoleto is steeped in tranquility, and backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Apennines. Here, as in much of Italy, exploring is simply a preamble to lunch: check out the Romanesque cathedral, the medieval fortress and the second-century amphitheatre - before finding a candlelit trattoria and indulging in pasta or pizza - washed down with an excellent Umbria wine.

Polignano a Mare, Puglia

Puglia boasts some truly romantic towns, but few induce the love vibe more than Polignano a Mare - the "Pearl of the Adriatic". Perched on a sheer limestone cliff, Polignano a Mare's white-washed streets are a delight to get lost in. Further afield, deserted sandy coves can be explored by boat. And after a full day of amore, you might take your lover to the Grotta Palazzese, regarded by many as the most romantic restaurant in the world.

Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Still off the radar of the big tour firms, Vernazza is the perfect place for a quiet seaside break of the romantic type. Punctuate your exploration of this peach-and-yellow colored town with pit stops in the many gelaterias, before taking a dip by the town's small sandy beach. For a romantic dinner, book a table at Belforte, housed in a medieval harbourside castle - and offering the most exquisite seafood for miles...
