Visiting Panama? Here's What You Should Know

Posted on Monday, 4 April 2016

While Panama has been hitting the headlines for some of its legal services recently, there are plenty of other reasons people visit this unique Central American country.

With a land area slightly less than that of Scotland, Panama is modestly sized compared to some of its neighbours, and is often visited as part of a longer visit to Central or South America. However, there's plenty to enjoy as a standalone destination, too.

Panama Canal

Famed for the canal which links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Panama's economy is heavily reliant on toll revenues generated by freight ships. Its potent geographical position has also helped to foster its trade, banking and tourism sectors.

Gamboa

A visit to the Panama Canal and its associated Miraflores Visitor Centre are considered must-see activities, as is a trip to the town of Gamboa, located on a bend in the Chagres River at the edges of the rainforest. Here, as in many other places in Panama, you can enjoy some of the best wildlife spotting in Central America.

Panama City

City lovers won't be disappointed by the culturally diverse capital, Panama City, offering all the trappings of a modern metropolis, together with an atmospheric Old Town (Casco Viejo).

If you have your fill of the dazzling wildlife in the rainforest or the-chilled out vibes of the capital, you can always head down to the beach for a spot of relaxation, Caribbean style. You might snorkel rainbow reefs or scuba dive with whale sharks off Bocas del Toro; explore ruined Spanish forts or set sail for the indigenous territory of Guna Yala. Indeed, Panama has succeeded in protecting its native cultures where it neighbours have not.
