SóLheimasandur Plane Crash Site: How to Find It
Iceland boasts all manner of dramatic photography locations, but few are more haunting or photogenic than the wreckage of the United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 which crashed here in 1973.
The plane was forced to crash-land on a vast black sandy beach. Luckily, all crew members survived.
Today, all that remains of the DC-3 is its wind-blown fuselage, which has provided the focal point for countless traveller photos.
But finding this 45-year old wreck is not easy. It's located very far from civilisation, so you need to plan any visit with care.
Many adventurous types seek out the plane at times of the year when the Aurora Borealis is in full effect. The remains of the old aircraft set against iridescent greens and pinks can make for some stunning photos.
How do I find the plane?
The plane is located in Sólheimasandur, set on the south coast between Skógafoss Waterfall and the town of Vik. Take Route 1 going east, pass Skógafoss, then look out for a bridge with flashing yellow lights and a dirt track on the left leading to Sólheimajökull Glacier.
Keep going east for 2km and watch out for a gateway to another dirt track on your right.
This entrance should be the only gap in the fence after the bridge. You'll know you've gone too far if you reach a second bridge.
You'll need to park near this entrance and walk the 4km to the plane, along the track. The landowners have now banned vehicle access, so be prepared for a walk over rough ground. Road markers line the track, so you shouldn't get lost even if you visit in the dark.
The DC-3 is concealed behind a large sand dune, so you won't see the plane until you're almost on top of it.
