9 Top GoPro Accessories for Travel in 2018

Posted on Friday, 22 June 2018

One reason GoPros are so great for travelling is their small size - making them easy to take around. But when you start to add accessories, your backpack or suitcase can start to fill up quickly. However, there are a few diminutive accessories that can help you get the very best footage from your GoPro. Here are our top picks…

Sticky mounts

These are great for quickly securely your GoPro to any flat or curved surface (choose the applicable shaped mount). They set in a few hours, but are generally usable after an hour, unless the scenario is just too demanding. If you want to save money you can buy a packet of reusable tabs, from brands like Scotch. But beware, they are not as strong as the original GoPro sticky tabs.

Mounting system

There are times when a sticky mount is inappropriate or indeed impossible (in situations that are already very wet, for example), which is where a specialised mounting system can come in handy. The ball-and-socket system from RAM is a durable and versatile option.

POV kit

Capture your point-of-view (almost exactly) with a POV kit. They snap on to backpacks (and belts) in a jiffy.

Selfie stick (or camera extender)

Capture those difficult-to-reach angles with a camera extender, also known as a 'selfie stick'. There are a number of brands available, including the GoPole Evo, which extends from 14 to 24 inches - allowing for some truly unique shots!

Red underwater filter

Love your snorkelling or scuba diving shots? You may have noticed that your footage is excessively blue. This is because the water filters out reds, oranges and yellows. Remedy this with a red filter, which will revitalise your underwater videos. PolarPro make one for snorkelling (Snorkelling Filter) and one for scuba diving (SCUBA Filters - Super Suit).

Surfing mount

It's a crying shame to go surfing and miss out on all that amazing footage. Remedy this by attaching a GoPro surf mount. They only cost about £10 and will deliver dramatic shots of you riding the waves.

1/4-inch thread

For some reason (cashing-in perhaps), GoPro decided not to fit a standard 1/4 inch thread to their cameras - thereby enabling them to sell you a lot of accessories that no-one else makes. But wait. Enter the Fotodiox Pro GoThrough adapter. Attach it and you will be able to use any standard tripod, and indeed many other photographic accessories. There are cheaper adapters than the Fotodiox, but for durability this is a great choice. And it will save you a great deal if you can use pre-existing photographic accessories.

Anti-fog inserts

GoPros can fog up pretty fast in some settings, potentially ruining otherwise great footage. Prevent this by buying some anti-fog inserts. Alternatively, you can opt for a do-it-yourself version using rice grains or toilet paper.

Safety tether

Stories abound of people who have come across GoPros that have been lost in rivers and on sea beds. Why? Because the owner didn't attach a safety leash! With a new GoPro costing several hundred pounds, it's worth investing a little to keep it on your person. GoPro make their own, but cheaper ones can be found if you shop around.
