7 Most Remote Golf Courses on the Planet

Posted on Wednesday, 26 April 2017

The relaxing qualities of a round of golf are well-documented: outside in the fresh air, in semi-natural surroundings, one's troubles have a tendency to simply drift away.

But if you really want to get away from it all on your next golfing excursion, you should consider the following seven courses. They may be a little challenging to reach, but they pay back dividends in natural beauty and serenity.

Machrihanish, Scotland

Found on a tranquil patch of the Kintyre Peninsula, Machrihanish is several hours' drive from Glasgow. You're unlikely to face any delays on the next hole while visiting this windswept course, which was developed from a 12 hole to an 18 hole by Old Tom Morris more than a century ago.

Streamsong Red and Blue, Florida, USA

Any golf lover taking a break in Florida this year shouldn't miss the wild beauty of these two courses. Developed in a former mining area, they have been likened to courses found in Scotland. Surrounding white dunes complete the scene.

Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs, New Zealand

Two of the most breath-taking courses in New Zealand – and indeed the world – Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs offer a remote yet spectacular golfing experience. These two sister courses are 400 miles apart but are linked by helicopter and plane. After travelling this far, you might as well enjoy both.

Sand Hills, Nebraska, USA

Opened in 1995, Sand Hills proved that Nebraska was prime country for developing splendid golf courses. A destination in its own right, it's also an amazing place for a round of golf. Other Nebraska courses have sprung up since, but few match Sand Hills' architectural and geographical splendour.

Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm, Tasmania, Australia

You're more likely to see wallabies hopping across this landscape than Tasmanian Devils, but these courses are magically alluring no matter what fauna pops up. The wild coastal location and superbly designed layouts make these worth the extra effort required to reach them.

Cabot Links, Nova Scotia, Canada

Upon seeing this course for the first time, the wife of a co-owner of this course said she felt like she'd entered a witness protection program. Pretty remote, then. It's also very new by golfing standards – and yet many say it has the majesty of a much more ancient links.

Lofoten Links – Gimsøysand, Norway

Despite being located 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle, plenty of golf lovers visit Lofoten to enjoy a round of super-remote golf. Half a dozen holes developed on cliffs overlooking the wild Norwegian Sea, this course is playable at all hours thanks to its extreme northerly location. Just wrap up well!
